If you’re an Elvis fan, no explanation is necessary. If you’re not an Elvis fan, no explanation is possible.

Question: A group of people don’t sort of approve of the thing you do. They seem to think that it contributes to juvenile delinquency and all sorts of things. Do you have any thoughts about the unpopular side of your audience?

Elvis: Yes, sir, I have. I’ve tried to figure it out. I don’t see how they could think that it would contribute to juvenile delinquency, someone’s only singing and dancing. I don’t see that. Because if there’s anything I’ve tried to do, I’ve tried to live a straight clean life and not set any kind of a bad example. I will say that there are people that are gonna like you and people that don’t like you regardless of what business you’re in or what you do. You cannot please everyone.

Aloha From Hawaii (January 14, 1973)

Forty years ago today, Elvis Presley made television and entertainment history with his Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii concert television special. The performance took place at the Honolulu International Center Arena in Honolulu. At 12:30 a.m Hawaiian time, the concert was beamed live via Globecam Satellite to Australia, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, The Philippines, South Vietmam and other countries. It was seen on a delayed basis in approximately thirty European countries shortly after. The concert did not air in America until April 4th, when an edited version of the performance, expanded with songs videotaped just after the live event, was presented on NBC. In all, it was seen in about forty countries by 1 to 1.5 billion people.
